GAYLORD, Mich. - Lake Superior State University's 17th annual Greater Peninsula Orthopedics Lake State Classic golf tournament brought in a record amount of more than $20,000 for Laker Club grant-in-aid scholarships.

The June 10-12 event in Gaylord drew 197 alumni and friends of Lake Superior State, up from 174 last year.

One highlight was a reunion of Lake Superior State College's first varsity hockey team, the 1966 Lakers, held during a reception on Sunday night. On hand were Jim Booth, Jim Fuller, Randy McArthur, Con Metro, Jack Theriault. They were joined by 1966 staff such as athletic director Bud Cooper, head coach Ron Mason, and student manager Roger Traviglini.

Lake Superior State University President Betty J. Youngblood presented framed team photos to the players and staff. Ron Mason, who is currently director of intercollegiate athletics at Michigan State University, received his gift and addressed the group.

On Monday morning 49 teams vied for first and second place tournament honors on the Otsego Club's Tribute and Classic courses.

Taking first place with a score of 58 in Flight A on the Tribute Course were Don Hillstrom, Doug LaPrade, Keith Neve, and Dave Thomas. Flight A second place on the Tribute were 1970s hockey alumni Rod Hooktwith, Don Perkins, Ian Ward, and Bob Webb with a 62.
