Sault Surge makes waves in back-to-back swim meets

The Sault Surge Aquatic Team made waves in back-to-back swim meets.

Twenty-seven swimmers headed to Sudbury for the NEOR #3 development meet, which resulted in 86 top 3 finishes and 76 personal best times for the team.

And this past weekend the team's Andrew Li and Brie Reid competed in the 2024 Ontario Winter Swimming Championships at Toronto's Pan Am Aquatic Centre, where both 14-year-olds swam to personal best times.

The Sault Surge Aquatic Team continues to make waves following consecutive back-to-back swim meets.

Twenty-seven swimmers represented the team at the NEOR #3 development meet hosted by the Nickel City Aquatics in Sudbury.

Surge swimmers swam to an impressive collection of 86 top 3 finishes ahead of Sudbury Laurentian Swim Club with 74. Along with the top 3 finishes Surge swimmers posted 76 personal best times.

Of those top 3 finishes, 39 were for event wins with 13 different swimmers winning individual events. 

Leading the way for the Surge swimming to event wins in all of their respective individual events were William Paraniuk and Eva Moreau with 6 individual first place finishes.

Also having strong performances swimming to top 3 finishes in each of their individual events were Jenna Morin with 1 first; 2 second and 3 third place finishes. Julianna Kaminski with 3 first place 2 seconds and a third place finish. Haylen Leonard with 2 first, 3 second place and a third place finish. Mia Lloyd earned 5 first place and a second place finish. 

The Sault Surge also picked up wins in the girls 11-12 age group and 15/over age group 200 metre freestyle relays as well as the boys 15/over 200m freestyle relay.

This past weekend the Sault Surge Aquatic Team was represented by Andrew Li, 14, and Brie Reid, 14, at the 2024 Ontario winter Swimming Championships held at the Toronto Pan Am Aquatic Centre. Both Li and Reid were first time qualifiers and both swam to personal best times. 

Reid swam to a best time in the 50m freestyle and came up with a heat win in her first event, the 50m freestyle. Reid also swam to a personal best time in the 200 metre breaststroke event. 

Li picked up personal best times in the 100 metre backstroke. 200 metre backstroke and 400 metre individual medley setting new boys 13-14 club records in all 3 events.

The Sault Surge will next race at the 2024 Canadian Winter Nationals as Brie Reid is set to compete at the national stage for the first time in her career in Winnipeg March 21-24, 2024 and the full squad is eligible to race at the third and final NEOR development meet scheduled for April 5-7 in North Bay.
