Sault gymnasts beaming after strong showings on the road

Over 25 athletes from the Sault Ste. Marie Gymnastics Club took part in weekend competitions in Midland and Lansing

Over 25 athletes from the Sault Ste. Marie Gymnastics Club took part in competitions in both Ontario and Michigan over the weekend — eight members taking part in the "Drop it Like it's Hot" competition in Lansing, Mich., and the rest in the "Gymfinity Challenge" in Midland, Ont.

The top all-around placements in Lansing over the weekend belonged to Platinum gymnast Ava Greener and Gold gymnast Peyton O'Brien, and the club secured several three-all-around finishes in Ontario.

Over the weekend the Sault Ste Marie Gymnastics Club split up to head to competitions in both Ontario and Michigan. The club sent over 25 athletes to these competitions to represent the club.

Eight members of the National and Jr National team headed to their final invitational of the season. They took part in the "Drop it Like It's Hot" competition put on by retired NCAA sensation Katelyn Ohashi.  The competition took place at the Lasing Centre in Lansing Michigan. 

The top all-around placements this weekend belonged to Platinum gymnast Ava Greener and Gold gymnast Peyton O'Brien. Greener was dynamite in her final invitational performance for the season.  In the Platinum Jr division Greener finished with first in vault, bar, beam and second on floor.  Greener finished first all-around and had her highest all-around score of the season.  

In the Gold Child division O'Brien was able to secure a 6th on vault, 1st on bars, 5th on beam and floor.  These placing were good enough for a silver all-around placing.  This also marking O'Briens highest all-around score of the season.  

Other top placings from Ohashi's competition include:

  • Emma Little- Silver (Child B)- 6th vault, 3rd beam, 2nd beam, 10th floor and 7th AA
  • Zeegwen Rickard- Gold (Child)- 7th vault, 5th bars, 1st beam and 6th AA
  • Reagan Deschamps- Gold (Child)- 10th vault, 3rd bars, 7th beam, 5th floor and 7th AA
  • Ivy Mooney- Gold (Child)- 9th vault, 10th beam and 10th floor
  • Addison Keating- Gold (Jr A)- 3rd vault, 1st beam, 3rd beam, 8th floor and 4th AA
  • Daiveny Pringle- Gold (Sr A)- 7th vault, 2 bars, 4th beam, 6th floor and 4th AA

The club also sent their Provincial and Interclub level athletes to the "Gymfinity Challenge" in Midland, Ontario. This marked the first competition of the season for the majority of these athletes.  The club secured several top 3 all-around finishes.  These athletes include: Blake Sutherland (1st), Emma Stewart (1st), Willa Shunk (2nd), Julia Foley (3rd), Haizel Shoemaker (3rd), Olivia O'Neil (2nd), Sarah Pellow (3rd), Nevaeh Alpha-Elie (1st), Madigan Hickey (3rd), and Caitlynn Shaganash (3rd).

The clubs detailed results are as follows:

LEVEL 1- AGE 9

  • Willa Shunk- 2nd vault, 2nd bars, 3rd beam, 4th floor and 2nd AA
  • Jula Foley- 7th vault, 1st bars, 4th beam, 3rd floor and 3rd AA
  • Kasey Rooley- 5th vault, 4th bars, 2nd beam, 5th floor and 4th AA

LEVEL 1- AGE 10 & 11

  • Blake Sutherland- 2nd vault, 1st bars, 4th beam, 2nd floor and 1st AA
  • Leah Coccimiglio- 5th vault, 5th bars, 3rd beam, 4th floor and 5th AA
  • Aria Socchia- 4th vault, 6th bars, 1st beam, 1st floor and 6th AA

LEVEL 2- AGE 10

  • Elizabeth Chlebus- 4th vault, 7th bars, 6th beam, 7th floor and 6th AA

LEVEL 2- AGE 11

  • Haizel Shoemaker- 4th vault, 2nd bars, 2nd beam, 2nd floor and 3rd AA

LEVEL 2- AGE 12

  • Lilah Keough- 6th vault, 6th bars, 4th beam, 2nd floor and 6th AA
  • Camille Murray- 2nd vault, 7th bars, 5th beam, 7th floor and 7th AA

LEVEL 2- AGE 13+

  • Olivia O'Neill- 3rd vault, 2nd bars, 2nd beam, 2nd floor and 2nd AA
  • Sarah Pellow- 1st vault, 3rd bars, 1st beam, 3rd floor and 3rd AA

LEVEL 3- AGE 13+

  • Nevaeh Alpha-Elie- 4th vault, 1st bars, 2nd beam, 1st floor and 1st AA
  • Madigan Hickey- 2nd vault, 3rd bars, 7th beam, 2nd floor and 3rd AA
  • Prisha Majumdar- 5th vault, 4th bars, 5th beam, 5th floor and 5th AA
  • Emma Stewart- 2nd vault, 1st bars, 1st beam, 3rd floor and 1st AA

LEVEL 4- AGE 14+

  • Caitlynn Shaganash- 2nd vault, 2nd bars, 4th beam, 4th floor and 3rd AA
  • Angel Unetic- 4th vault, 4th bars, 3rd beam, 3rd floor and 4th AA

Next action for the national group is a National qualifier this Wednesday and all Level 3 and up Provincial and Interclub athletes will be heading to Whitby for a Provincial qualifier on Thursday.
