The Sault Ste. Marie Professional Firefighters Association (SSMPFFA) is getting set for the puck to drop this weekend on its 16th annual Hockey Marathon, which raises money for local charity.

Scheduled for this Friday April 19 from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Saturday April 20 from 8 a.m. to noon, the marathon invites local teams to pledge and participate in the 18-hour event, aiming to raise funds for the community.

This year 18 teams are participating.

In a news release, the SSMPFFA said it is seeking support from community businesses to sponsor ice time at $155 per hour.

"Sponsors will receive prominent recognition during the event and across various media platforms," the SSMPFFA said.

The marathon, held at the Soo Pee Wee Arena, offers not only hockey games but a pasta dinner on Friday from 5 to 8:30 p.m., and a pancake breakfast on Saturday from 8 a.m to noon, both at the Centre Ice Bar & Grill (upstairs at the Soo Pee Wee). Tickets will be available for purchase at the door.

"Thank you to all who have donated, participated, and helped in this event's ongoing success," the firefighters association said. "Join us in uniting the community through hockey and charity."
