OCAA Women’s Volleyball

The Sault College Cougars women’s volleyball team was back in action Saturday afternoon as they played host to visiting St. Clair College from Windsor.

Early in the first set the Cougars put their back against the wall by allowing the Saints out to a 13-4 lead. From that point on the Cougar women came alive clawing themselves back into the match with hustle and enthusiasm. A couple of bad breaks and they surrendered the set to the visiting squad 25-23.

Those bad breaks and missed opportunities again factored into the 2nd set as the Saints took advantage of every mistake handing the Cougars a 25-14 loss.

The lady Cougars in the third set showed once again their resolve like they have all season in battling back to meet the challenge and playing entertaining volleyball for all those in attendance. But in the end the Cougars couldn’t overcome their unforced errors and dropped the third set 25-20.

High scorers for Sault College were Kelly Roussell and Megan Szatanski with 7 and 4 points apiece, while St. Clair was lead by Jillian Johnson with 13 points, including 11 kills.

The Cougars have a week to recover from the disappointing weekend as they prepare for their next game Friday night against Lambton College.

OCAA Men’s Basketball

The Sault College men’s basketball team were back on the court Saturday afternoon versus their west region rivals the St. Clair College Saints.

From the opening tip the Cougar men played sluggishly, spotting their Windsor opponents to a 23–0 lead in the first 5 minutes. In a first half filled with turnovers the Cougars stopped the bleeding and limped into half time down 35-13.

The second half saw the Cougar men come alive as the relentlessly chipped away at the Saints lead with gritty pressure defence and opportunistic team offence. With less than 5 minutes left to play the Sault College squad rallied to bring the Saints within 6 points. However, as has been the case much of the season there simply wasn’t enough gas left in the tank as the Saints in the end pulled away for a 20 point victory 85-65.

The Cougars were again led by rookie sensation Jay Ripplinger with 18 points while the visiting Saints were paced by guard Bilal El-Haghassan with a game high 27 points.

Next up for the Cougars is Lambton College next Friday at the Sault College Athletic Facility.
