Sault College wraps up OCAA curling tournament

The Ontario College Athletic Association (OCAA) curling championship wrapped up at the Community First Curling Centre locally on Sunday afternoon.

A pair of local entries from Sault College were in contention for medals as the tournament came to a close.

The Sault College mixed team, which features skip Sandy Toole, vice Nick Klein, second Dana Tetreault, lead Robert Taylor and spare Lucas Zammit, finished second to claim silver after a 7-2 loss to Humber in Sunday’s final.

Sault College jumped out to a 2-0 lead following singles in each of the opening two ends. Humber would then cut the lead to one with a single in the third before steals of one in each of the next three ends and a steal of three in the seventh end to seal the win.

Sault College advanced to the final thanks to a 10-4 victory over Fleming on Sunday morning. Humber neat Fanshawe 10-3 in the other mixed semifinal.

The bronze medal match in the mixed division saw Fanshawe steal one in an extra end to beat Fleming 7-6.

In the men’s division, the Sault College team made up of skip Nick Servant, vice Dan Lethbridge, second Spencer Clark, lead Brad Manson and spares Gavin Bell and Kristian Nelson finished fourth after dropping s 5-4 decision to Mohawk.

Leading 3-1 through three ends, Sault College surrendered a single in the fourth and steals of one in the subsequent three ends to fall behind 5-3.

The men’s final saw Humber win gold thanks to a 6-4 win over Fanshawe.

In the women’s final, Humber beat Niagara 6-4 to claim gold while Fanshawe broke open a tight game with four in the seventh to beat Fleming 8-3.
