Sault College men's hockey team picks up a weekend split, basketball faces St. Clair on the road

The Sault College men’s hockey team picked up a split on the road over the weekend in American Collegiate Hockey Association action.

On Friday night, Sault College fell behind early as Grand Valley jumped out to a 4-1 lead through 20 minutes en route to a 9-4 win.

Zack Kippe had two goals and an assist while Gage Thrall chipped in with a goal and two assists.

Jay Dziegelewski assisted on four Grand Valley goals. Shane Haggerty and Zach Borchardt assisted on three goals each.

Evan Chomchai scored a pair of goals.

Tyler Slabaugh and Derek Becker had a goal and an assist each.

Howard Rose and Adam Hillebrand also scored.

Grand Valley goaltender David Johansson made 37 saves.

Ryan Vendramin had a pair of goals for Sault College. Lucas Duckstein and Bryceton Lalonde also scored.

Kaelan O’Flynn assisted on a pair of Sault College goals.

Goaltender Drew Gregory got the start for Sault College but was chased from the game after surrendering three goals on six shots. Justin Richer made 28 saves the rest of the way.

On Saturday night, Sault College rebounded for a 5-2 win to pick up the split.

The teams traded goals early before Sault College took a 2-1 lead late in the opening period and never trailed in the contest.

Vendramin had a goal and two assists to pace Sault College offensively.

Mark Tassone and Max Khull chipped in with a goal and an assist each while Duckstein and Lalonde had a pair of assists each.

Parker Morgan and Austin Rowe also scored.

Richer got the start and made 28 saves.

Hillebrand and Rose scored for Grand Valley.

Johansson made 28 saves.

Up next is a pair of games on the road against the Marquette Golden Eagles, beginning on Dev. 7.

In Ontario Colleges Athletic Association basketball action over the weekend, both the women’s and men’s teams at Sault College were on the road against St. Clair.

On Saturday night, the women’s team dropped a 67-44 decision to the Saints.

After a tight opening quarter that saw Sault College lead by three at the end of the frame, St. Clair used a big second quarter to take the lead en route to the victory.

Noor Bazzi of St. Clair led all scorers in the game with 25 points. Jana Kucera chipped in with 16.

Cassidy Sabourin led Sault College with 20 points.

On Sunday, Kucera had 23 points as the St. Clair women’s team capped off the weekend sweep with a 69-42 win.

Bazzi, Keirsten Tomkins, and Logan Kucera had 11 points each for St. Clair.

Sabourin, Skylar Toms, and Emma Filion had 11 points each for Sault College.

In men’s basketball action, Sault College dropped a 105-99 decision in overtime on Saturday against St. Clair.

David Gomez led St. Clair with 29 points while Jalen Harmon had 26 for the Saints.

Simon wall had 38 points for Sault College and 12 rebounds.

Valentine Okeke added 14 while Jaylyn Moore-Tucker had 13.

On Sunday, St. Clair cruised to a 116-64 win.

Gomez had 20 points for St. Clair while Jesiah Deerr had 15.

Wal had 19 points for Sault College. Moore-Tucker had 13.

The Sault College basketball teams return to action on Nov. 23 at home against Fanshawe.
