ROCKTON -- The Sault Sabercats took a giant leap towards an Ontario Varsity Football League playoff berth here on Sunday.

Using a stellar defense and a solid rushing attack, the Sabercats defeated the Wentworth Panthers 22-9 to improve to 4-2 on the season.

The victory also put an end to the road portion of the Sabercats regular season schedule where they finished with a 3-1 record.

In another very important game on Saturday, the Sabercats host the Guelph Bears at 1 p.m. at Rocky DiPietro Field.

Kofi Osei scored two touchdowns on the ground for the locals, who trailed 7-0 in the first quarter, while Tyler Brown added another major score on a 60 yard punt return.

Defensive lineman Tyler King recorded a safety while Frank Weise booted two converts.

Peter McGonegal led the rushing attack with 60 yards on eight carries while Jeff Greco gained 58 yards on 14 carries and Osei added 55 yards on seven attempts.

Quarterback John Mullin was held to five pass completions on 19 attempts for 40 yards and two interceptions. Brown caught two passes for 29 yards.

Defensively, Weise made four tackles and recorded two quarterback sacks while Jordan Verdone added 3.5 tackles and recovered a fumble. Mike Storozuk made 3.5 tackles and a sack, Jason Amadio added four tackles, Matt Ritchie recorded a sack and Tom Rose recovered a fumble.
