Sabercats anxious for game day

The Sault Sabercats will get their first glimpse at the talent they possess as the team opens their second season with an exhibition contest on Saturday in Sudbury.

Head coach Ross Viotto is anxious to watch his Sabercats in a game situation and have the opportunity to work all his players onto the field. An exhibition contest is a luxury the Ontario Varsity Football League team didn't have last season.

"This game will give us a chance to get all the bugs out. The new kids will get the chance to learn what the league is about, travelling and playing on the road so I'm glad we have the opportunity to play this game," said Viotto.

The Sabercats coaching staff will evaluate players fighting for starting positions at certain spots. The biggest battle in training camp is at quarterback where Ryan Maunu, Anthony Amadio and Frank Weise are all fighting for playing time. Holes in the defensive secondary also need to be filled.

"I'm looking at splitting the playing time at quarterback between Maunu and Amadio and I would like to get the young guy (Weise) is there for a few plays as well. We are also looking to get all our running backs into the game to give them a few carries. This is a chance for somebody to step up," said Viotto.

The game will also mark the first game for the Sudbury Northerners franchise in the OVFL. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Cambrian College.

After two weeks of on-field practise, the Sabercats coaching staff has been impressed with the work ethic. Viotto has also been impressed with fullback Mark Palumbi, who is emerging as the team leader.

Some bad news was dealt to the club with offensive lineman Gary Knox hanging up the cleats for the year. Knox injured his ankle during workouts with Team Ontario and the nagging injury will require time away from the field.

The Sabercats open the regular season with a pair of road games against Guelph and London on May 24 and June 1, respectively. After a bye week, the Cats home opener is scheduled for June 14 at 7 p.m. versus the Essex Ravens at Rocky DiPietro Field.
