Qualifying for provincials, local track athletes strut their stuff

All local schools will have representatives when the OFSAA meet opens on June 6

A busy stretch for local high school track and field athletes continued this week in North Bay.

Following the city meet last week, athletes from all of the local high schools took part in the annual Northern Ontario Secondary School Athletics (NOSSA) meet.

With OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association) spots on the line, a number of local representatives earned spots in the provincial event, which opens on June 6 at the University of Guelph.

Following is a breakdown of how some of the local athletes (broken down by school) fared at NOSSA, which wrapped up on Thursday.

CASS

Jenna Fleming finished first in the women’s senior javelin throw (42.49 metres) and second in the senior discus throw (32.49 metres).

Kalevi Karhi took top spot in the men’s junior 3000-metre thanks to a time of 10:13.72 and captured second in the junior 1500-metre with a time of 4:42.24

Blake Dunning had a pair of seconds thanks to times of 11.58 seconds in the men’s senior 100-metre dash and 23.12 seconds in the men’s senior 200-metre.

Cole Stevens finished first in the men’s senior javelin throw (42.13 metres) while Michael Shaw finished second (40.70 metres), and Caleb Parker finished third (40.36 metres).

Korah

Jessica Bannister took top spot in the junior women’s 100-metre dash with a time of 13.67 seconds.

Bannister was also part of the Korah team that finished third in the junior women’s 4X100 relay. Bannister, Grace Kreps, Cali-Anna Elliott, and Hannah Furbacher finished the relay with a time of 54.43 seconds.

Jaydn Zeppa had a pair of first place finishes at the two-day event. She took top spot in the senior women’s 100-metre dash (13.30 seconds) and in the senior women’s 400-metre dash (1:01.89). Zeppa also finished second in the senior women’s 200-metre dash (26.98 seconds).

Taylor Elliott finished first in the senior women’s shot put (10.94 metres).

Jaden Grisdale picked up a second place finish in the senior men’s discus throw (34.34 metres) and a third in the senior men’s shot put (11.34 metres).

Mattthew Talvite finished second in the midget men's triple jump (11.90 metres).

NIcholas Talvite took second in the midget men’s 200-metre dash (24.34 seconds) and third in the midget men’s long jump (5.51 metres).

Gracie Sloss finished third in the senior women’s high jump (1.45 metres).

St. Mary’s

Elliot Anderson finished first in the midget men’s high jump (1.65 metres).

Kassandra Sartor finished in top spot in the women’s 100-metre dash (13.19 seconds), second in the 200-metre dash (26.43 seconds), and third in the long jump (4.50 metres), all at the midget level.

Nadia Speck was first in the junior women’s 80-metre hurdles (12.98 seconds).

In the junior men’s shot put, Drew Vachon finished first (12.79 metres).

The Knights relay team of Sartor, Brooke Brazeau, Stephanie Pagnotta, and Ava Evans finished first in the 4X100 midget relay (53.69).

In the junior women’s 4X100 relay, the Knights entry of Speck, Olivia Gavey, Bryanna Zimbaro, and Haley Costain finished second with a time of 53.81 seconds

Costain was second in the junior women’s 80-metre hurdles (13.39 seconds).

Sierra Lidstone-Drodge finished second in the junior women’s high jump (1.40 metres).

Joshua Marrello took third in the senior men’s 100-metre dash (11.62 seconds).

Aydon Roswell was third in the junior men’s 100-metre hurdles (17.09 seconds).

Mikayla Sewell had a pair of third place finishes. Sewell finished third in the junior women’s shot put (9.14 metres) and in the junior women’s discus (24.10 metres).

Zimbaro finished third in the junior women’s 300-metre hurdles (50.99 seconds).

In the junior men’s 4X100 relay, the St. Mary’s team of Theo Smith, Carmen Caputo, Chase Wilson, and Stephen Pszeniczny finished third with a time of 47.29 seconds.

Superior Heights

Liam Morassut finished first in the senior men’s 400-metre hurdles (57.76 seconds) and second in the 110-metre hurdles (15.99 seconds).

Taelyn Santos finished first in the midget women’s triple jump (9.96 metres) and third in the 80-meter hurdles (13.84 seconds).

Owen Young-Pine took top spot in the senior men’s high jump (1.85 metres).

The senior relay team of Amy Carlson, Emma Bil, Tessa Leveille, and Alexa Notte finished first in the senior women’s 4X100 relay (53.70 seconds).

Taryn Greco finished second in the junior women’s long jump (4.82 metres) and third in both the junior 800-metre (2:35.53) and 1500-metre (5:24.75).

Hannah Heimonen finished second in the midget women’s 3000-metre run (11:35.83) and third in the 800-metre run (2:32.43).

Noah Metivier placed second in the midget men’s 100-metre hurdles (15.96 seconds) while Notte finished second in the senior women’s triple jump (10.58 metres).

The Steelhawks relay team of Alistair McLeod, Jacob Tanner, Dean Breton, and Gabe Barkley finished second in the midget 4X100 (48.96 seconds).

In the open women’s 4X400, the Steelhawks team of Carlson, Heimonen, Greco, and Ella Wilson finished second (4:26.61).

Breton finished second in the midget men’s long jump (5.69 metres).

Kallie Wiese was second in the junior women’s javelin (26.15 metres).

Wilson placed second in the junior women’s 400-metre dash (1:04.25).

Brayden Corbett Lewis picked up a pair of third place finishes, including in the senior women’s shot put (10.00 metres) and in the senior women’s discus throw (26.60 metres).

Carter Ambeault finished third in the men’s midget 300-metre hurdles (47.21 seconds).

Leveille finished third in the senior women’s 100-metre dash (13.69 seconds).

Abby vonRoenn was third in the midget women’s shot put (8.95 metres).

Julian Wilson ran to a third place finish in the junior men’s 1500-metre (4:54.95).

The Superior Heights relay team of Morassut, Elam Wilson, Cole Grigg, and Mark Keenan finished third in the open men’s 4X400 relay (3:47.44).

White Pines

Brett Pearce finished second in the junior men’s 800-metre run with a time of 2:16.21 and placed third in the junior men’s 300-metre hurdles with a time of 45.33 seconds.

Evan Bowman was second in the junior men’s javelin (44.04 metres).

Mackenzie McBride placed second in the senior women’s high jump (1.47 metres).

Kayla Thibault-Jones finished third in the junior women’s javelin (23.93 metres).
