Algoma Thunderbirds play host to university meet at George Leach Centre

Grappling with what to do for entertainment this Saturday? You might want to check out some wrestling.

On Feb. 10, Algoma University will host the 2024 OUA Wrestling Championships at the George Leach Centre.

The event will start at 10 a.m. and continue through the day until 6 p.m. Gold medal matches are scheduled for 3 p.m.

Members of the community have the option to attend and can purchase tickets here.

“We are excited to host this event as it gives the community an opportunity to not only watch our team in-person, but also attend a major OUA event,” Jarret Miller, manager of athletics and recreation at Algoma University said in a news release.

Ontario University Athletics is the association under which many Ontario universities compete.

Spectators can expect athletes from Brock, Western, Queen’s, York, TMU, Lakehead, Toronto, Carleton, McMaster and Guelph to hit the mats here in the Sault.

Organizers note the Algoma Thunderbirds had great success last year, with Kyle Price placing 1st at 100kg and Lilah Fraser placing fourth at 76kg.

“We are excited to be the host school this year,” said head coach Trevor Manchester. “The team has had a great season thus far, and we look forward to competing at home.”

For those unable to attend the event, a livestream will be available on OUAtv.

On the day of the event, the university will be supporting the local Period Drive. They ask those who attend the event to bring unopened menstrual products such as pads, tampons and panty liners.

The products will be donated to St. Vincent Place, SOYA (Save Our Young Adults) From Drug Abuse and Northland Adult Learning Centre.

The George Leach Centre is at 1520 Queen St. E.
