Petes celebrate 50th anniversary with OHL Championship win

In Peterborough, Trevor Hendrikx scored a pair of first period powerplay goals that helped the Petes to a 4-3 win over the London Knights in Game 4 of the Rogers OHL Championship Series on Thursday.

Peterborough won the Rogers OHL Championship Series in four games. It's the ninth time that the Petes have won the J. Ross Robertson Cup and first since they won the OHL championship in 1996.

"I've never felt anything like this before," Hendrikx said after the game. "I can't put it into words."

Daniel Ryder of the Petes won the Wayne Gretzky 99 Award as the most valuable player of the 2006 OHL playoffs as selected by the media covering the Championship Series. Ryder scored 15 goals and 31 points in 19 playoff games to lead the Petes in scoring in the playoffs.

"To win this is very exciting," Ryder said. "It's great. The first year I was here, we didn't even make the playoffs. It's pretty exciting for all of us. We're pretty pumped. We knew it wasn't going to be easy."

Rob Schremp and Sergei Kostitsyn scored early in the first period to stake the Knights to a 2-0 lead. Ryder put the Petes on the board with his 15th of the season. Greg Stewart also scored in the first period for the Petes before Schremp rounded out the scoring with a powerplay goal with 2:43 left in the third period.

The Petes play their first game of the MasterCard Memorial Cup next Friday against the loser of the QMJHL championships between the Moncton Wildcats and Quebec Remparts (7:00 p.m. Eastern on Rogers Sportsnet).

“This is everything I expected," Petes' captain Jamie Tardif said. "It was a great series and a great season. It’s (still) not the trophy we’re after. It’s a great accomplishment for our team, but there’s still one more out there.”

The Petes were a perfect 10-0 at home in the post-season.

"The longer you're in this league, the more you realize how hard this is to win," Pete's General Manager Jeff Twohey said. "It's very special."
