Patrick Kaleta scored the winning goal 14:20 into the second overtime to give the Peterborough Petes a 6-5 win over the London Knights in the opening game of the Ontario Hockey League Championship Series on Friday.

“London has such a great record at home,” said Petes’ Dick Todd, who has guided the Petes to seven overtime wins in the playoffs. “We were pleased that we were in a tied position at the end of each period and finally prevailed in overtime. I think that we have to get smarter as a hockey club. We had to do it (win in London) if we’re going to win the series. It’s one game at a time – it’s an old cliché, but that’s how it’s going to be if we are going to win.”

Jordan Staal scored two goals for the Petes with Steve Downie, Liam Reddox and Fredrik Naslund adding singles. Jordan Morrison chipped in with two assists.

Rob Schremp had a goal and three assists while Scott Aarssen, Ryan Martinelli and David Bolland also scored for the Knights. Dylan Hunter scored on a powerplay with 2:47 left in the third period to send the game to overtime.

"Both teams played hard and whoever scored the last goal was going to win," said Knights' coach Dale Hunter. "Whoever gets the break scores. We worked hard and they got a break."

Adam Dennis made 64 saves for the Knights, including a penalty shot on Kaleta in the second overtime period. David Shantz made 56 saves for the win,

Game 2 of the series goes Sunday in Peterborough at 4:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live across Canada on Rogers Sportsnet.

SooToday.com's Brad Coccimiglio will be in Peterborough and will provide complete coverage of the contest.
