The White Pines Wolverines gained only a single point on Thursday but remain in contention for a playoff spot at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) A/AA Hockey Championships in Timmins.

With a tie and a loss on Thursday, the Wolverines sit with a 1-1-1 record with one round robin game remaining in their pool.

On Friday, the eighth seeded Wolverines will face Embrun High School at 10 a.m. A win would vault the Wolverines into a quarterfinal playoff game while anything less would give Embrun (2-1) the playoff position.

On Thursday, White Pines opened with a 3-3 tie against Ottawa's Holy Trinity before falling to Oakville's Appleby College 3-1. Appleby, the tournament's number one seed, finished first in the pool at 4-0.

Matt Santos scored two goals and set up another in the draw with Holy Trinity while Josh Reed scored once and added an assist. Anthony Silvano scored the lone goal in the loss.

The top two teams from each five-team pool advance into quarterfinal play with the semi-finals and final scheduled for Saturday.

The Wolverines are representing NOSSA at the provincial championships after defeating the Korah Colts just over two weeks ago in the championship game at Memorial Gardens. The victory also avenged a loss to the Colts in the city championship series.

*** CURLING:

Cassie Heppner's Bawating Braves girls rink split their opening two games at the OFSAA championships in Ottawa on Thursday.

In the opener, Heppner led 3-0 after one end and 6-2 after three but eventually fell 11-6 to Sarnia's Northern Collegiate, who stole three points in the fifth end and two points in each of the next two ends.

In the afternoon draw, Heppner built a 6-1 lead through five ends and held off a late charge from Toronto's York Mills for a 7-5 win.

Heppner is joined by Callie Heppner, Heather Robitaille and Amie Romanchuk.

On Friday, the Braves conclude the round robin with games against Hamilton's Sherwood Secondary at 8 a.m. and Brockville's St. Mary Catholic High School at noon.

The top two teams in each five-team pool will advance to Friday's quarterfinal draws. The semi-finals and championship game are scheduled for Saturday.
