The White Pines Wolverines are off to a good start at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) A/AA Hockey Championships in Timmins.

On Wednesday, the Wolverines defeated Timmins' ESC Theriault 5-4 thanks to a timely four goal performance by sniper Anthony Silvano.

Silvano scored his fourth goal of the game on the power play with just 10 seconds remaining in regulation time to lift the Wolverines to the win. Silvano also picked up an assist on Josh Reed's second period goal while Matt Santos added a pair of helpers.

Theriault jumped out to a quick 2-1 lead in the first period before White Pines battled back to send the game into the third period tied 3-3.

White Pines, the tournament's eighth seed, will play twice on Thursday beginning with Ottawa's Holy Trinity at 8 a.m. followed by a match with Oakville's Appleby College, who is the tournament's number one seed, at 2 p.m.

On Friday, the Wolverines conclude the round robin at 10 a.m. against Embrun.

The top two teams from each five-team pool will advance into quarterfinal play with the semi-finals and final scheduled for Saturday.

The Wolverines are representing NOSSA at the provincial championships after defeating the Korah Colts just over two weeks ago in the championship game at Memorial Gardens. The victory also avenged a loss to the Colts in the city championship series.
