NOSSA track takes over Sault (Day 1 Results)

The Jo Forman track was full of excitement on Thursday as the Northern Ontario Secondary Schools Association Track and Field Championships got underway in Sault Ste. Marie.

The Jo Forman track was full of excitement on Thursday as the Northern Ontario Secondary Schools Association Track and Field Championships got underway in Sault Ste. Marie.

Local athletes fared well in numerous categories in both the Women's and Men's events on the day. Many of them will find themselves competing on Friday for an opportunity to earn a berth in OFSSA.

Sir James Dunn, who dominated the city meet last week, enjoyed even more success at the NOSSA meet with four athletes taking home top spot and a guaranteed berth in OFSSA while four more qualified in the one of the top three spots for the finals of their events, which will take place on Friday.

Taylor Corelli, who won a pair of events at the city meet, took home top spot in the Women's 3000 Meter Run at the Midget level. Corelli's time of 11:41.45 beat out Jessica Busch of Lockerby (Sudbury) by nearly 17 seconds. Alysha Gjos of St. Mary's finished in third while SJD's Nora-Beth Saunders finished fourth.

Holley Dailey of SJD placed first in the Women's Long Jump (Midget) with a jump of 4.73 meters. Kelsie Dinsmore of Korah placed third.

Dominik Graf won the Men's (Midget) 3000 Meter run after finishing the lengthy race in a time of 9:39.84, which was nearly 24 seconds faster than his nearest competitor and James Bergamin won the Men's (Senior) Javelin Throw.

Other local athletes to win their respective events include: Cassandra McCaig of Korah, who won the Women's Triple Jump in the Junior Division; Jordan Verdone of St. Mary's won the Men's (Junior) Discus; Holly Maskell of White Pines, who won the Women's (Senior) Shot Put; and CASS' Ryan Kent won the Men's (Senior) 400 Meter Hurdles.

In the preliminary events, which will see their finals run on Friday, locals also fared well.

On Friday, the NOSSA Track and Field Championships continue with all events being held at Jo Forman track. Action kicks off just after 9 a.m.

* Women's 200 Meter Dash – Tiffany Senko of St. Mary's; Cassandra McCaig and Michaela Febbraro of Korah; Amanda Atkinson of St. Basil

* Women's 80 Meter Hurdles – Celene Bailey and Carley Boynton of Sir James Dunn; Molly Puddister of White Pines; Karli Celetti of CASS

* Men's 200 Meter Dash – Nick Peters of White Pines; Ben Ginter of Korah; Dave Aubertin of Notre Dame des Grands Lacs
