Northern Ontario Cadet Biathlon Competition

Cadet’s will compete to progress to the Central Region Biathlon

Races will be at the Algoma Rod and Gun Club 226 Connor Rd. Sault Ste Marie

26, 27 Jan 08

On the 26th of Jan Biathlete Cadets from Hunstville, Timmins, Sudbury and Sault Ste Marie will compete this weekend for advancement to the Central Region Biathlon held 09,10 February in Sault Ste Marie.

Cadets will be skiing on the only Ontario, Biathlon Canada’s Nationally approved course that has several challenging hills. The Biathletes after each time around the course will ski into the range and attempt to knock down five targets using a 22 rifle. For any target not knocked down the Biathlete will have to ski a short penalty loop before going out on the next lap of the course.

These Biathletes have been training for many months for this competition by running, skiing and core strength training as well as marksmen ship skills. The cadets are age 12 to 18 with races for Junior and Senior age groups with male and female racers.

Those successful this weekend will compete in the Regional Competition with the goal of winning a spot to compete at the National Cadet Biathlon held in March of this year. The teams are made up of Sea, Army and Air Cadets that are part of the Canadian Cadet Movement.

The Canadian Olympic Biathlon has been made up of past Cadets that were introduced to the sport through competitions such as the one this weekend. It is interesting to note that of the ten Olympic Biathlon medals that Canada has won eight were brought home by past Cadets.
