North Stars take over first place in GNML

The Soo North Stars have regained sole control of first place in the Great North Midget League with a pair of wins on the road over the weekend. In a first place battle with the Valley East Cobras on Friday night, the North Stars took a 4-1 decision.

The Soo North Stars have regained sole control of first place in the Great North Midget League with a pair of wins on the road over the weekend.

In a first place battle with the Valley East Cobras on Friday night, the North Stars took a 4-1 decision. On Saturday night, the North Stars survived a penalty filled affair to score a 5-1 victory over the Rayside Balfour Sabrecats.

On Friday, Jerry Petingalo and Anthony Colizza scored once and assisted on another each while Jarrett Burton and Mike Rivard also scored. Micky Sartoretto picked up a pair of assists.

On Saturday in Chelmsford, 138 minutes in penalties were called, including 66 minutes to the North Stars. Although no power play goals were scored, the North Stars tallied twice while shorthanded and once on a penalty shot.

Colizza and Kurtis Travaglini scored once and assisted on another each while single goals went to Burton, Bronson Kovacs and Brett Thompson.

Burton's goal came on a penalty shot while Kovacs and Thompson scored shorthanded. The game was scoreless after one period while the North Stars took a 4-1 lead after two.

With the wins, the locals, who are riding a four-game winning streak, improve to 13-0-0-1 for 27 points and a four point lead over Valley East.

Next weekend, the North Stars travel back to Sudbury for the Big Nickel Tournament beginning Friday.

The North Stars return to GNML action November 11-12 when the Kapuskasing Flyers visit the John Rhodes Community Centre for a pair of games. The puck drops at 7 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
