The Soo North Stars are off to a successful start in their defense of back-to-back Great North Midget League championships.

Following a 4-2 win over the Valley East Cobras on Saturday, the North Stars extended their early season record to 2-0 with a sweep of the Cobras by capturing Sunday's contest 5-0 at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

The locals built a 3-0 lead early in the first period and never looked back as veteran goaltender Ryan Dube picked up his first shutout of the campaign.

Derrek Coccimiglio's first of two goals followed by goals from Brad DiCandia and Adam Pyymaki just seven seconds apart spotted the North Stars a 3-0 lead just 8:26 into the game.

Dean Howard added a second period power play goal for the locals while Coccimiglio, who recorded a hat trick on Saturday, notched his second of the day in the third period.

Dylan King added a pair of assists while Pyymaki and Howard each recorded an assist for two-point games.

The North Stars will now head out on the road for the next three weekends and are not scheduled for another home contest until Sudbury visits for a pair of games on October 8th and 9th.

Next weekend, the Stars visit the Kapuskasing Flyers on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.
