North Stars open regionals with win

The Soo North Stars are off to a good start at the Telus Cup Central Regional Championships in Waterloo.

The Soo North Stars are off to a good start at the Telus Cup Central Regional Championships in Waterloo.

On Monday night, the Great North Midget League and Northern Ontario Hockey Association champion North Stars opened the tournament by defeating the host Waterloo Wolves 7-3.

The North Stars led 1-0 after one period and 4-2 after two while outshooting the Wolves 30-26.

Mike Rivard scored twice and set up two others while Brett Thompson added two goals and a helper. Micky Sartoretto picked up a goal and three assists with single goals going to Jerry Petingalo and Anthony Colizza. Kurtis Travaglini assisted three times and Kevin Mills twice.

The North Stars are back in action on Tuesday at 1 p.m. against the London Jr. Knights.
