The Soo North Stars are in contention for a Big Nickel Tournament championship in Sudbury.

Despite dropping their final game of the preliminary round, the North Stars captured second place in their division to advance into quarterfinal playoff action on Saturday night.

Facing Great North Midget League rival Rayside Balfour in the quarterfinal, the North Stars triumphed with a 5-0 victory.

Earler Saturday, the locals lost 3-1 to Mississauga. No scoring details were available for either game.

The North Stars now get set to face the Richmond Hill Stars at noon today in one semi-final with the winner advancing into the championship game at 6 p.m.

With a pair of games on Friday, the North Stars opened with a 3-2 win over the Guelph Jr. Storm. Jerry Petingalo, Mike Rivard and Brett Thompson scored in the win.

In the night cap, Josh Cerasuolo and Thompson scored in a 2-0 win over the Timmins Majors. Thomas Gravelines recorded the shutout.
