NOJHL opening weekend recap

The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League kicked off the 2006/07 regular season with three games over the weekend. On Saturday, the Blind River Beavers scored a 6-1 home ice win over the Manitoulin Islanders.

The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League kicked off the 2006/07 regular season with three games over the weekend.

On Saturday, the Blind River Beavers scored a 6-1 home ice win over the Manitoulin Islanders. Josh Faulkner and Bobby Seymour scored twice each for the Beavers while singles went to David Jarick and Matt Irving. Tyler Corston-Moore replied for Manitoulin.

In Iroquois Falls, two third period goals lifted the defending champion Sudbury Junior Wolves to a 4-2 win over the Abitibi Eskimos. Matt Chiupka, Ryan Mathes with two goals and Chris Pontes scored for the winners while Felix Boutin notched both Abitibi goals.

On Sunday in North Bay, the Eskimos fell 4-0 to the Skyhawks. Scott Faulkner scored twice with Justin Piquette and Bryan Albert adding a goal each.

The Soo Thunderbirds open the season on Friday against Abitibi at 7:30 p.m. at the John Rhodes Community Centre before hosting North Bay on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

In the Michigan Sault, the Soo Indians open against North Bay on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Big Bear Arena and entertain Abitibi on Saturday at 7 p.m.

The Beavers visit Sudbury on Wednesday and host Abitibi on Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Blind River Memorial Community Centre.
