NHL draft wraps up

The National Hockey League held its annual draft over the weekend and three members of the Soo Greyhounds had their names called. Veteran defenseman Josh Godfrey was the first to hear his name called.

The National Hockey League held its annual draft over the weekend and three members of the Soo Greyhounds had their names called.

Veteran defenseman Josh Godfrey was the first to hear his name called. Godfrey was selected in the second round, 34 overall, by the Washington Capitals. Godfrey scored 24 goals and 57 points in 68 games. The 18-year-old added nine goals and 14 points in 13 playoff games and also played in the all-star game.

In the fifth round, 141 overall, the Pittsburgh Penguins selected defenseman Jacob Muzzin. Muzzin saw limited action with the Greyhounds this season but impressed scouts.

One round later, the Penguins drafted another Greyhound in forward Dustin Jeffrey. Acquired in a trade with Mississauga for Chris Lawrence, Jeffrey had a breakout season in 2006-07. Jeffrey had 34 goals and 92 points in 68 games and then added another six goals and 18 points in 13 playoff games.

Local product Zack Torquato was also selected. The Erie Otters forward was selected in the sixth round by the Detroit Red Wings. Following a trade from Saginaw, Torquato scored 20 goals and 46 points in 43 games with the Otters and,, like Godfrey, played in the All-star game.
