Mayor's Cup finals go tonight

Friday night's semi-final action at the Mayor's Cup saw both third place teams upset the second place finishers. In the 35 and Over game, Mr. Transmission and Weedman played a tight first period with neither team scoring.

Friday night's semi-final action at the Mayor's Cup saw both third place teams upset the second place finishers.

In the 35 and Over game, Mr. Transmission and Weedman played a tight first period with neither team scoring. Weedman opened the scoring on the power play when Bob Lindsay put a perfect feed from Bill Carriere past Mr. Transmission goaltender, John Shamess. Rick Evans of Mr. Transmission tied the score with 7:13 remaining in the third period on a pass from Frank Medaglia. Two minutes later, Bill Carriere scored Weedman's second power play goal on a pass from Mike Johnson. Tony Greco added an empty net goal for Weedman, and put the defending champions, Mr. Transmission, out of the tournament.

Weedman will go on to face Boissoneau Bus Lines in the final game at 7:00pm Saturday night.

In the Open Division semi-final game, each team scored three times on the power play, in a penalty filled game. Defending champions, Assante/Mr. Transmission jumped out to a 2 – 0 lead before, Terry Chikoski got Godfrey Realty on the scoreboard with 4:09 remaining in the first period. With 1:36 left in the first, Laine Bertin split the Godfrey Realty defence and dragged a backhand goal past Tom Loza to give Assante/Mr. Transmission a 3 – 1 lead heading into the second period.

Just 51 seconds into the second frame, Carl Halverson blasted one over the glove of Assante/Mr. Transmission goaltender, Kevin Sawyer, to cut the lead to 3 – 2. Chris Towell scored for Assante/Mr. Transmission with 10:27 remaining in the period when he rushed from his own blue line, split the Godfrey defence, and slid one past Tom Loza, to increase the lead to 4 – 2 for Assante/Mr. Transmission. Godfrey Realty scored twice on the power play, late in the second period, on goals from Frank Porco and Derek MacKay, to knot the score at 4.

In the third period, Nathan Inch scored the eventual game winner with 10:25 remaining in the game. Inch added the insurance goal at the 3:29 mark. Both goals were scored on the power play. With their eyes fixed on back to back championships, Assante/Mr. Transmission defeated, Godfrey Realty by a final score of 7 – 4, ensuring themselves a spot in the championship game against the Soo Kings, Saturday night at 9:00pm at the Pee Wee.
