THUNDER BAY — Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Matt Murray is taking an indefinite leave after the death of his father.

The team on Wednesday confirmed the former Soo Greyhounds netminder’s father, James Murray, passed away the previous day.

“The Pittsburgh Penguins offer our deepest condolences to Matt Murray and his family on the passing of Matt's father, James Murray, (Tuesday) in Ontario,” the Penguins said in a Wednesday statement on Twitter.

“Matt is returning home from the west coast and will miss an indefinite period of time to be with his family.”

Murray had returned home last week for what head coach Mike Sullivan described at the time as “personal reasons” but had rejoined the team over the weekend.

James Murray was a lawyer in Thunder Bay.
