LSSU offers limited-edition Doug Weight print

************************* SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – It's a moment captured in time: Laker hockey great Doug Weight centers his puck during a power play.

Maybe he passes or lets loose a game-winning goal.

You decide; it's your watercolor print and one of only 200 copies in the entire world.

Lake Superior State University's Foundation Office commissioned Tedi Selke, a well-known regional artist and art teacher, to create the action rendering in watercolor to support LSSU’s Laker Hockey program.

Selke (shown signing the prints) created the scene by combing action photographs taken during Weight's player days at LSSU during the late 80s and early 90s.

The uniform, venerable jersey #11, is what Doug Weight wore during his 1990-91 season.

Each unframed 15- by 20-inch print is personally signed by Selke, with net proceeds earmarked to benefit Laker hockey.

Weight was highest-scoring freshman in the nation during the 1989-90 season, with 21 goals and 46 assists.

As a sophomore he totalled 29 goals, including an LSSU-record of 10 game-winning goals and 46 assists.

He helped the Lakers to the 1991 Central Collegiate Hockey Association regular-season and playoff titles and was named second-team All America that year.

Weight was 19th on the LSSU career scoring list after playing only two seasons.

Since turning pro in 1991, Weight has played two seasons with the New York Rangers, nine seasons with the Edmonton Oilers, and three seasons with the St. Louis Blues, an organization he recently returned to after four months with the Carolina Hurricanes.

During this year's NHL playoffs, Weight and the Carolina Hurricanes suffered a huge blow during Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals when Weight was sandwiched heavily along the boards by Raffi Torres and Chris Pronger.

He missed the rest of Game 5 and all of Game 6 and 7 with a shoulder injury.

The Hurricanes, however, took the Stanley Cup on June 19, 2006.

Weight's other career highlights include action in the German Elite League during the shortened 1994-95 season and the cancelled 2004-05 season.

He is primarily known for his signature saucer passes, which lift high and land flat.

Weight has also played for Team USA during the 1998 and 2002 Olympics, earning a silver medal in 2002.

In 2006 he joined Laker alums Brain Rolston and John Grahame in rounding out the 23-player Team USA squad.

All told, Weight has more than 200 goals and 500 assists during his post-Laker career.

As a former Oiler captain, he led Edmonton in scoring for the fifth straight season in 1997-98, a feat matched only by The Great One, Wayne Gretzky

In 2002 Weight was the first former Laker player to make a major financial contribution to LSSU.

The Doug D. Weight Endowed Scholarship is awarded to a Laker hockey player who is recommended by the Laker Hockey coach and LSSU athletic director.

With Weight's generosity of endowing a scholarship, institutional dollars can then be utilized for general hockey operations.

Tedi Selke's Doug Weight painting is limited to a run of 200 prints, available through LSSU's Foundation Office for $100 each.
