Saturday, Sept. 30, is the deadline for Lake Superior State hockey season-ticket holders to claim their seats for the 2006-07 season.

The season kicks off at 7 p.m. on Sept. 30 with the annual Blue-White Game at Taffy Abel Arena. Although admission for the Blue-White Game is free, the Norris Center Ticket Office will be open from 6-8 p.m. so season-ticket holders can pick up their tickets. The general public can also purchase tickets at that time, but unclaimed season-ticket holders’ seats won’t be released until 8 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 2.

The Norris Center Ticket Office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information, call 906-635-2602.

The Lakers officially open their season with an exhibition game at Pullar Stadium against Lakehead University on Saturday, Oct. 7. This game, which will bring fans back to the early days of Laker hockey and the old ICHA rivalries, will not be part of the season ticket package. General admission tickets for this game are $5 for adults and $3 for children and LSSU students.

The season ticket package includes 18 home games. If purchased before Sept. 30, season tickets are $126 (full season), $65 (Friday only or Saturday only) and $70 (children). Prices go up to $144 (full season), $72 (Friday only or Saturday only) and $75 (children) after Sept. 30. Single-game tickets are $9 or adults and $5 for children.

*** GREYHOUNDS EXHIBITION TICKET PRICES:

Ontario Hockey League action is coming to Sault, Michigan, when the Soo Greyhounds take on the Sudbury Wolves at 7 p.m. Sunday at Taffy Abel Arena.

Tickets are available at the Norris Center Ticket Office Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and from noon until game time on Sunday.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and students, and $5 for children. LSSU students can purchase tickets for $5.

*** WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL:

The Lake Superior State volleyball team accumulated a season-high 72 kills to avenge last week's loss to Gannon.

The Lakers picked up their first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory by overpowering the Golding Knights, 30-24, 28-30, 30-20, 30-21 on Sunday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

LSSU, whose previous best was 69 kills in a five-set, season-opening loss to Wisconsin-Parkside, posted a team attack percentage of .259. Ashley Wyers led the Lakers with 19 kills and a .400 attack rate, followed by Brishia Stroven with 16 kills (.293 attacking) and Ali Jones with 11. Erin McLain (.533 attacking) and Sara Hess added nine kills each.

McLain also finished with 52 assists. Six players reached double figures in digs as Jones and Jessica Ewer led with 17 each.

Jamie Groos totaled a team-high two block solos and six assists.

LSSU improved to 4-7 overall and 1-1 in GLIAC play. Gannon fell to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in league play.

Lake Superior State dropped a 3-1 decision to Mercyhurst in its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball opener Friday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

Mercyhurst (6-4 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) avenged last weekend's five-set loss to LSSU at the Mercyhurst Tournament.

Brishia Stroven totaled 14 kills, two aces, and 13 digs to lead Lake Superior State, which lost Games 3 and 4 after splitting Games 1 and 2 against Mercyhurst.

Sara Hess added nine kills, followed by Ashley Wyers with eight. Erin McLain totaled 37 assists. Liz Holden, at the libero position, led in digs with 16, and Jamie Groos led in blocks with two solos and five assists.

Ashley Wyers totaled 13 kills and Jamie Groos added nine to lead the Lake Superior State volleyball team to a 30-24, 30-19, 30-24 victory over Davenport in Thursday's home opener at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

The Lakers play this Thursday at Northwood.

*** GLIAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK:

Lake Superior State junior Megan LaMothe was named Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week in women's tennis after going 4-0 during the Lakers' season-opening duals with Wayne State and Findlay.

LaMothe (Troy, Mich.) was 2-0 at No. 2 singles and 2-0 while paired with senior Alex Chiakmakis at No. 2 doubles. The highlight of her weekend was an 8-6 tie-breaker that led to a 9-8 doubles victory over Wayne State and gave the Lakers a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. She also came back from a first-set loss to win her singles match against the Warriors, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, and led the Lakers to a 6-3 team victory over previously undefeated WSU.

LaMothe also posted a 6-1, 6-0 singles win over Findlay. She and Chiakmakis won their doubles match 8-2, helping LSSU to a 9-0 victory over the Oilers.

LSSU competes at the ITA Regional in Midland beginning Friday.
