The Lubbock Cotton Kings and the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees of the Central Hockey League reached an agreement in June, sending the rights of forward Emery Olauson to the Bees in exchange for the rights of former Lake Superior State forward Trevor Weisgerber.

The Cotton Kings placed Weisgerber under contract on Aug. 23.

Weisgerber, who played at LSSU from 1999-01, played in all 64 games last season with the Killer Bees and led the Bees in scoring with a franchise single-season best 63 points (20-43-64). The 27-year-old also set the franchise record for consecutive games with an assist (six), and co-led the team in special-team goals (12), power-play goals (nine), short-handed goals (three) and game-winning goals (five).

The 6-2, 185-pound forward spent three seasons playing for the San Angelo Saints prior to joining the Killer Bees.

*** LSSU softball team picks up four players during spring 2006 recruiting season:

The Lake Superior State softball team will add four more players, including a transfer from Grand Valley State, to its 2006-07 recruiting class.

L'Anse Cruise North High School catcher Nichole Dunford, former GVSU utility player Rachel Hall, Ida High School catcher Carrie Thompson and Clio High School first baseman Amber Kern have committed to LSSU. They will join April Brandt (White Cloud, Mich.), Lacey Knoop (Reed City, Mich.) and April Romines (Anchor Bay, Mich.), who signed a National Letter of Intent last fall.

Hall, a Southgate, Mich., native, appeared in 20 games and scored seven runs last season for the GVSU Lakers. The former Ann Arbor-Gabriel Richard High School standout earned All-Catholic League and Division III all-state honors as a prep athlete. She helped lead Gabriel Richard to the DIII state finals in 2005.

Dunford, from Chesterfield, Mich., earned All-Macomb Area Conference White Division, MAC All-Academic and Division I all-district honors for L'Anse Cruise North in 2006. She batted .423 with 45 RBIs and a .536 on-base percentage. She also batted .564 with a .764 slugging percentage while playing for the St. Clair Shores Vipers travel team this summer.

Kern, a first baseman, earned Division II all-state honors in 2006 after batting .445 and totaling 45 hits and 28 RBIs for Clio High School. She is a three-time All-Big Nine Conference selection. She played for the Compuware and Grand Rapids Blaze travel teams.

Thompson was 1-for-3 at the plate to help lead Ida to a 2-1 victory over Gladstone in the 2006 Division III state finals. While playing this summer for the 22-6 Lady Irish Gold travel team, she batted .265 with four doubles.

LSSU opens its fall season on Sept. 16 at Northwood.

*** Cooper Golf Classic is Sept. 9:

The annual Bud Cooper Golf Classic that benefits Lake Superior State women's athletics will be held Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Sault Municipal Golf Course.

Entry fees for the four-person, 18-hole scramble are $120 per golfer and include a cart, special events, refreshments on the course, door prizes and dinner. Awards will be presented to winners in four divisions determined by handicap. The first registered golfer to get a hole-in-one on any of the par 3s will receive a special prize, including $10,000 for an ace on No. 18.

*** Former Laker Kevin Wilson re-signs with Amarillo; Wilson will play for Jim Wiley:

Former Lake Superior State defenseman Kevin Wilson has re-signed with the Amarillo Gorillas of the Central Hockey League.

Wilson, a 6-0, 190-pound defenseman from Thompson, Man., totaled seven goals and 23 assists in 64 games last season for the Gorillas. He also had a +5 rating, which ranked fourth on the team.

Before coming to Amarillo, Wilson spent two seasons with the San Angelo Saints (CHL), where he totaled 10-27-37 in 124 games. He played at LSSU from 1999-02.

Wilson will be coached by former Laker Jim Wiley ('72), who was an NAIA All-American. Wiley, a long-time coach, is in his first season at Amarillo.
