FOUR LOCAL GIRLS COMPETE WITH TEAM NORTH: Sault Ste. Marie was well represented at the Ontario Summer games as four local basketball players were members of Team North. Lexie Bordin, Samantha Hunt, Emily McClelland and Julia MacDonald were selected to the team after a series of tryout camps held throughout the north.

Other members of Team North included Kayla Cuomo, Kristy Dube, Lauren Martel and Corissa Blaseg from Sudbury while Kristen Wright, Maggie Atkins, Taylor Morrison and Maria Fletcher, all from the Muskoka area were also on the roster. The team was coached by Mary-Lynn Turk and her husband Erik.

WRIGHT COMMITS TO LSU: Sault Ste. Marie native, and former Bawating Braves basketball star, DJ Wright committed to Louisiana State University.

The 6-foot-7.5 small forward is thought to be a major recruiting victory for the school according to some analysts.

“There wasn’t really one thing that changed my mind,” Wright told The Advocate. “From day one I felt like I was going to be headed to LSU once they started recruiting me last year. Then they sent me some stuff that I looked through and really liked and decided there was no reason to keep waiting.”

At Toronto Academy Prep School (TAPS) last season, Wright averaged 22.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, four blocked shots and four steals per game.
