Lakers sweep at home

The Lake State Lakers hockey team faced the Alabama Huntsville Chargers in WCHA action over the weeked

The Laker Superior State Lakers picked up a pair of important Western Collegiate Hockey Association victories over the weekend.

The Lakers picked up two victories over the University of Alabama Huntsville Chargers at Taffy Abel Arena.

On Saturday night, Max Humitz and Collin Saccoman had a goal and an assist as the Lakers capped the weekend with a 4-1. Mitch Hults and Luke Morgan assisted on a pair of goals each. James Roll and Gage Torrel also scored. Gordon Defiel stopped 34 shots.

Brandon Salerno had the lone goal for the Chargers.

On Friday night, a goal by Hults at 13:10 of the third period was the game-winner as the Lakers skated to a 5-4 win over the Chargers. The goal came after Alabama Huntsville erased a 4-2 Lakers lead in the period.

Hults and J.T. Henke had a pair of goals each for the Lakers. Gus Correale also scored for Lake State. Morgan assisted on a pair of goals. Defiel stopped 29 shots.

Kurt Gosselin had a goal and an assist for the Chargers. Cam Knight assisted on a pair of goals. Brandon Parker, Brent Fletcher and Josh Kestner also scored for Alabama Huntsville. Jordan Uhelski got the start in goal and stopped 15 shots in two periods of work. Carmine Guerriero came in and made four saves in the third period.

Next up for the Lakers is a weekend series on the road at Minnesota State-Mankato beginning on Jan. 27.
