Lakers complete non-conference sweep

Lakers dominate second half

Oct. 28, 2006 -- SAULT STE. MARIE, MI -- Lake Superior State dominated the final 30 minutes of Saturday's hockey game to pull away from a 1-1 tie and beat American International 4-1 in a non-conference hockey game at Taffy Abel Arena.

The Lakers completed the series sweep to improve to 4-2-0 overall, while AIC concluded a three-week road stretch with an 0-5-0 record. LSSU resumes Central Collegiate Hockey Association play at Bowling Green State on Nov. 3-4.

Dan Eves, who finished with a goal and an assist for the night, gave LSSU a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 11:58 of the first period.

Despite being out-shot handily, AIC evened the score, 1-1, on Jereme Tendler's goal at 9:23 of the second period. The momentum quickly shifted back to the Lakers' favor when rookie Nathan Perkovich tallied his fifth goal of the season less than a minute later.

LSSU went into the lockerroom with a 3-1 lead thanks to Jeff Rainville's power-play goal with 25 seconds remaining in the middle stanza. The Lakers had a 30-11 shots-on-goal advantage after two periods.

Jason Blain, a transfer from Northeastern, scored his first goal as a Laker at 1:22 of the third period.

Freshman goaltender Pat Inglis totaled 14 saves to earn the win and improved his season record to 2-0-0. AIC goalie Coby Robinson finished with 38 saves.

Derek A. Smith, finished with two assists for the night, while Troy Schwab, Matt Martello, Trent Campbell, Derek R. Smith and John Scrymgeour had one each. For the weekend, Rainville totaled three goals and Perkovich had two. Derek A. Smith, Derek R. Smith and Schwab finished with three assists each.

LSSU finished 2-for-6 on the power play, while AIC was 0-for-5. The Lakers held the Yellow Jackets' power play scoreless for the weekend.

Jakaitis records eighth career shutout

Rainville scores two goals in 5-0 win

Oct. 27, 2006 -- SAULT STE. MARIE, MI -- Senior goaltender Jeff Jakaitis stopped all 23 shots to record his eighth career shutout lead the Lake Superior State hockey team to a 5-0 victory over American International on Friday at Taffy Abel Arena.

Jakaitis, who totaled six saves in the first period, 14 in the second and three in the third, improved his season record to 2-2-0. LSSU (3-2-0) out-shot AIC, 31-23.

Jeff Rainville led LSSU's offensive attack, scoring a power-play goal at 3:13 of the first period and making it 4-0 with an even-strength goal at 5:10 of the second period.

Nathan Perkovich also scored in the first period, and Barnabas Birkeland added a goal on a slap shot through the slot early in the second period. Josh Sim rounded out the scoring by knocking in his own rebound at 4:14 of the third period.

Derek R. Smith and Troy Schwab contributed two assists each, while Derek A. Smith, Trent Campbell, Matt Martello, Simon Gysbers and Pat Aubry added one each. LSSU finished 1-for-3 on the power play, and American International was 0-for-2.

AIC goaltender Coby Robinson totaled 26 saves.
