Lakers come up one goal short at Miami

Jakaitis' 44 saves is second-highest total of the year

OXFORD, Ohio - The Lake Superior State hockey team regrouped after spotting Miami a 3-0 lead, but came up short in a 3-2 loss Saturday at Steve Cady Arena.

LSSU (15-14-3 overall, 9-12-3 Central Collegiate Hockey Association), which gave up three unanswered goals in the third period of Friday's 4-1 loss, fell behind 3-0 during the first 28 minutes of Saturday's game.

Laker Jeff Rainville spoiled Miami goaltender Jeff Zatkoff's shutout by scoring a power-play goal at 16:43 of the second period, cutting the 12th-ranked RedHawks' lead to 3-1.

Troy Schwab narrowed the lead to 3-2 with an even-strength goal at 13:41 of the third period.

Derek R. Smith, Steven Kaunisto and Derek A. Smith drew assists for the Lakers.

Miami (20-10-4 overall, 15-7-4 CCHA) out-shot LSSU 14-7 in the third period and 47-33 for the game. LSSU goaltender Jeff Jakaitis' 44 saves was his second-highest save total of the season.

Matt Christie scored Miami's first goal on a two-man break-away and also drew an assist to lead the RedHawks. Jarod Palmer and Geoff Smith added goals for the RedHawks.

Both teams finished 1-for-8 on the power play.

LSSU competed with 17 skaters for the second time in three games due to losing junior Dan Eves to an injury on Friday.

The Lakers play host to Michigan at 7:35 p.m. Friday.
