Lakers snap losing streak, sweep Bulldogs

Having lost six straight, the Lakers returned home to pick up a pair of wins

The Lake Superior State Lakers opened Western Collegiate Hockey Association conference action over the weekend and did so with a pair of wins.

The Lakers swept the Ferris State Bulldogs in games played at Taffy Abel Arena in the Michigan Sault on Friday and Saturday nights.

The Lakers opened the weekend with a 5-4 win in overtime on Friday night thanks to a goal by Max Humitz with 16 seconds to go in the extra frame.

Ashton Calder scored a pair of goals to pace the Lakers offensively while Humitz and Collin Saccoman had a goal and an assist each.

Lukas Kaelble and Hampus Eriksson assisted on two goals each for Lake State.

Pierre-Luc Veillette also scored.

Goaltender Mareks Mitens made 25 saves for Lake State.

Ferris State goaltender Roni Salmenkangas stopped 33 shots.

Jason Tackett had a pair of goals for the Bulldogs. Jake Transit and Brenden MacLaren also scored.

Nate Kallen assisted on a pair of goals.

On Saturday night, Saccoman had a pair of goals as the Lakers capped off the sweep with a 4-3 win.

Louis Boudon had a goal and two assists while Calder set up three goals for the Lakers.

Veillette also scored.

Mitens made 20 saves in goal.

Dalla Tulik scored a pair of goals for Ferris State while Jake Willets assisted on two goals.

Blake Evannou had the other Bulldogs goal.

Carter McPhail got the start in goal and made 33 saves for Ferris State.

The Lakers entered the weekend having lost six straight games in non-conference action and sit with a 2-0 record in conference action thanks to the victories.

Next up is a pair of road games for the Lakers as the team continues conference action next weekend. The Lakers will face Bemidji State for a pair of games, beginning on Friday night.
