Lakers wrap up Superior Showcase with 4-3 loss at MTU

LSSU plays host to Western Ontario in home opener on Oct. 20

HOUGHTON - Lake Superior State dominated the second period, but Michigan Tech reclaimed momentum in the third and held on to win Sunday afternoon's Superior Showcase showdown, 4-3, at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

LSSU's Simon Gysbers scored on a long slap shot with one second remaining in the first period to trim MTU's lead to 2-1. Laker Nik Sellers tied it 2-2 at 7:41 of the second period, and teammate Nathan Perkovich gave LSSU a 3-2 lead by scoring at 9:50 of the middle stanza.

With two seconds remaining in a Michigan Tech power play late in the second period, the Huskies' Jordan Foote scored to make it 3-3. MTU's Jimmy Kerr tallied the game-winning goal at 3:39 of the third period.

Michigan Tech (1-1-0) finished 2-for-6 on the power play, while LSSU (0-1-1) was 0-for-4. Three of the Lakers' four power-play chances occurred in the first period. LSSU had the only power-play opportunity in the third period.

LSSU goaltender Pat Inglis totaled 21 saves, while MTU netminder Rob Nolan finished with 14.

Chad Nehring and Dan Eves drew assists on Sellers' goal. Rick Schofield and Josh Sim assisted on Perkovich's goal. Gysbers' goal was unassisted.

Perkovich tallied a goal in both games for Lake Superior State over the weekend. Sellers, Nehring and Eves had a point in both games.

Minnesota-Duluth defeated Northern Michigan 4-0 on Saturday and posted the best record of the four teams in the inaugural Superior Showcase.

LSSU returns home to play Western Ontario at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena.

Perkovich and Eves score for Lakers

DULUTH, Minn. - Lake Superior State and Minnesota-Duluth exchanged leads, then settled for a 2-2 tie in the hockey season opener for both teams Friday at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center.

Minnesota-Duluth took a 1-0 lead at 18:48 of the first period on a goal by Trent Palm.

LSSU sophomore Nathan Perkovich tied it, 1-1, at 5:19 of the second period on a play set up by Will Acton. The Lakers took a 2-1 lead on a goal by senior Dan Eves at 4:52 of the third period. Sophomore Nik Sellers and freshman Chad Nehring drew the assists.

Palm drew his second point of the night by assisting on Jordan Fulton's game-tying power-play goal just over two minutes later.

LSSU sophomore goaltender Pat Inglis totaled 37 saves in his season debut. The Bulldogs (0-0-1) out-shot LSSU, 39-25. LSSU finished 0-for-5 on the power play, while UMD was 1-for-5.

In the other Superior Showcase game on Friday, Northern Michigan defeated Michigan Tech 3-1 in Houghton. The Wildcats play at UMD at 8:07 p.m. EST on Saturday.
