Lakers beat Buckeyes in overtime

LSSU power play goes 5-for-8

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State's power-play electrified, going a season-best 5-for-8, as the Lakers beat Ohio State 6-5 in overtime Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena.

Sophomore Zac MacVoy scored a power-play goal 42 seconds into overtime to secure the win for LSSU (4-16-4 overall, 2-13-3 Central Collegiate Hockey Association), which salvaged a series split with the Buckeyes (8-18-2 overall, 4-13-1 CCHA). The power play started at 18:44 of the third period when OSU's top player, Tommy Goebel, was whistled for contacting Laker goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson.

"I'm really proud of the way the guys played tonight," LSSU coach Jim Roque said. "We don't have a lot of confidence because we don't win a lot, but I was glad to see the guys come back with momentum, and I was glad that they hung in there. It was a great play for Matt Cowie to find Zac MacVoy at the net for the win."

The Lakers suffered a one-goal loss the previous night on a power-play goal with eight seconds left in the game.

LSSU was 2-for-4 with the man-advantage in the first period, 2-for-2 in the second period, 0-for-1 in the third and 1-for-1 in overtime. Ohio State was 1-for-4 on the power play. Previously, the Lakers best power-play outing of the season was 3-for-8 against Clarkson in late October.

"For hockey fans, you can't get better hockey," Roque said. "For the price of admission, the fans got two damn good games to watch. You can't be disappointed with the level of play this weekend."

LSSU jumped to a 3-0 first-period lead on two goals by Troy Schwab and one by Dan Eves. Steve Kaunisto assisted on Schwab's first goal, which was a power-play marker, and Nathan Perkovich drew the assist on his second goal. Will Acton and MacVoy picked up assists on Eves' power-play goal.

Ohio State cut the lead to 3-2 early in the second period on a power-play goal by Jason DeSantis at :46 and an even-strength goal by Corey Toy at 5:56.

Acton gave the Lakers a 4-2 lead on a power-play goal at 9:06 of the second period. MacVoy and Cowie had the assists.

Goebel scored at 11:29 of the second period, and Perkovich answered with a power-play goal at 14:52, leaving the Lakers with a 5-3 lead. Perkovich scored moments after play resumed from a 40-minute delay due to broken glass. Schwab assisted on the goal for his third point of the night.

OSU knotted the score at 5-5 on goals by Kyle Reed at 3:26 and Goebel at 7:12.

Cowie and Simon Gysbers assisted on MacVoy's game-winner. MacVoy also garnered three points for the game.

Mahoney-Wilson totaled 31 saves, including 14 in the third period. OSU's Joseph Palmer allowed five goals and totaled 11 saves through two periods. Dustin Carlson totaled five saves during the final 20:42.

The Lakers continue their homestand with a series Feb. 1-2 against Ferris State. Both games are slated for 7:05 p.m. at Taffy Abel Arena.

Buckeyes overtake Lakers with eight seconds left

Scrymgeour leads LSSU with two assists

SAULT STE. MARIE - Ohio State scored two power-play goals during the final 10 minutes of regulation, including the game-winner with eight seconds left, to beat Lake Superior State 4-3 Friday during Game 1 of a Central Collegiate Hockey Association series.

OSU (8-17-2 overall, 4-12-1 CCHA) was 2-for-2 on the power play in the third period and 2-for-4 for the game. Peter Boyd scored the game-winner at 19:52 with only one second remaining in the Buckeye power play.

The game was deadlocked, 1-1, after one period as OSU's Mathieu Picard and LSSU's Carter Lee traded even-strength goals.

Pat Aubry gave Lake Superior State a 2-1 lead with an even-strength goal at 5:51 of the second period, but Buckeye Tommy Goebel scored the first of his two goals to tie it, 2-2, at 19:16.

Zac MacVoy put the Lakers in front 3-2 at 6:15 of the third period, and Goebel answered again at 9:59.

Sophomore John Scrymgeour, who suffered a season-ending knee injury while playing against Ohio State exactly one year ago, earned assists on LSSU's first two goals. Steve Oleksy also drew an assist on Aubry's goal, while Dan Eves and Chad Nehring assisted on MacVoy's goal.

Lee's goal was his first as a Laker.

LSSU (3-16-4 overall, 1-13-3 CCHA) finished 0-for-3 on the power play.

Laker goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson totaled 35 saves as OSU out-shot Lake State, 39-28 for the game and 28-15 during the final two periods. Joseph Palmer had 25 saves for the Buckeyes.
