Lakers pound Bowling Green to even series

Lakers win 6-1 to even series

Acton and Gysbers score two goals each

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Lake Superior State dominated Bowling Green in the second and third periods for the second straight night, but Saturday's effort was a bit more convincing.

The Lakers scored four goals in the second period and two more in the third to bury BGSU 6-1 and even the Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoff series at one game apiece.

LSSU (10-19-7), which spotted the Falcons a 3-0 lead Friday and eventually lost 4-3, exploded with three goals during a four-minute span early in the second period Saturday. The Lakers scored four goals in one period for the first time since Jan. 5, 2007, when they came back with four third-period goals to tie Nebraska-Omaha, 4-4.

Freshman Will Acton put the Lakers on the board at 4:59 of the second period. Sophomore Pat Aubry made it 2-0 with a 4-on-4 goal at 7:50, and Simon Gysbers increased the lead to 3-0 at 8:51 with another 4-on-4 marker. All three were even-strength goals. Assists went to Matt Cowie and Gysbers on Acton's goal, Nathan Perkovich and Dillin Stonehouse on Aubry's goal, and Justin Gutwald and Zac MacVoy on Gysbers' goal.

Jacob Cepis scored Bowling Green's lone goal during a Falcon power play at 11:12 of the second period. Gysbers answered with a power-play goal at 14:19, and the Lakers took a 4-1 lead into second intermission despite being out-shot, 25-24.

At the beginning of the third period, Jimmy Spratt replaced BGSU starting goaltender Nick Eno.

LSSU increased its lead to 5-1 when Perkovich carried the puck down the ice and fed to Acton, who scored a short-handed goal at 9:19. Dan Eves was credited with the Lakers' sixth goal as LSSU's top line of Eves, MacVoy and Rick Schofield scored at 13:39.

Lake Superior State's five-goal victory margin was its largest of the season. It was Bowling Green's worst setback since losing 6-1 at Notre Dame on Jan. 25.

LSSU goaltender Pat Inglis totaled 34 saves, including 16 in the second period and 10 in the third. The Lakers finished 1-for-8 on the power play, while the Falcons were 1-for-4.

The Lakers and Falcons play Game 3 of the series at 7:05 p.m. Sunday at the BGSU Ice Arena. The Northern Michigan-Ohio State series is also headed to a Game 3 showdown, and Alaska was beating Nebraska-Omaha 4-2 early in the third period to stay in contention for a third game. Ferris State swept its home series against Western Michigan.
