U.S. Under-18s improve to 4-6-2 against DI teams with 3-1 win at LSSU

Lakers resume play Dec. 29 at Badger Classic

SAULT STE. MARIE - The U.S. Under-18 Team bounced back from Friday's 5-4 overtime loss at Northern Michigan and defeated Lake Superior State 3-1 in an exhibition game Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena.

The U-18s improved to 4-6-2 against NCAA Division I teams and 18-8-3 overall. The game did not affect LSSU's standings.

Team USA's Cade Fairchild scored at 7:17 of the second period to break a 0-0 tie. The U-18s built a 3-0 lead on second-period goals by Colin Wilson at 18:07 and James vanRiemsdyk at 19:03. VanRiemsdyk also contributed an assist for the night.

LSSU spoiled the shutout with 31 seconds remaining in regulation. Stuffed Teddy Bears rained down on the ice after Troy Schwab's goal, and the dozens of Teddy Bears will be donated to the Chippewa County Department of Children's Services.

Schwab's rebound goal at 19:29 was scored while LSSU goaltender Jeff Jakaitis pulled in favor of an extra attacker. Derek A. Smith and Trent Campbell drew assists.

U-18 goaltender Brad Phillips totaled 27 saves. LSSU starting goalie Pat Inglis totaled 21 saves through two periods. Jakaitis stopped all six shots in the third period. The U.S. squad out-shot the Lakers, 30-28.

Both teams were 0-for-4 on the power play.

LSSU will enjoy at two-week holiday break and resume play on Dec. 29 at the Badger Classic in Madison, Wis.
