Lakers dominate third period to claim 3-3 exhibition tie

LSSU battles back from 3-1 deficit

SAULT STE. MARIE - Nathan Perkovich and Chad Nehring scored unanswered goals in the third period to bring the Lake Superior State hockey team back from a 3-1 deficit and help the Lakers claim a 3-3 overtime tie during Saturday's exhibition home game against Western Ontario.

LSSU trailed 2-0 through the first 21:26 of play until Pat Aubry cut UWO's lead to 2-1 with a four-on-four goal at 6:33 of the second period. Prior to that goal, the Lakers had been short-handed for 1:40 while fighting through a five-minute major penalty. Dillin Stonehouse had the only assist on Aubry's goal.

UWO's Jeff Martens scored his second goal of the game to give the Mustangs a 3-1 lead at 9:26 of the second period. The two-goal cushion stood until Perkovich scored 54 seconds into the third period. Troy Schwab assisted on the play.

LSSU rookie Chad Nehring scored the game-tying goal at 16:14 of the third period as the Lakers out-shot UWO 14-4 during the final stanza. Nik Sellers and Dan Eves had the assists.

LSSU goaltender Pat Inglis took over for freshman starter Brian Mahoney-Wilson midway through the game and made four key saves in the third period and overtime. He shut the Mustangs out for 35:34. Mahoney-Wilson totaled 10 saves and allowed three goals through 29:26.

Western Ontario was 1-for-4 on the power play, while LSSU was 0-for-4. The Lakers out-shot the Mustangs, 43-24.

LSSU plays its first home series against seventh-ranked Clarkson at 7:05 p.m. on Oct. 26-27.
