Lakers pick up a forward and defenseman during fall signing period

SAULT STE. MARIE - Vaughan Vipers forward Colin Campbell and Nepean Raiders defenseman Zachary Sternberg have signed National Letters of Intent to play hockey at Lake Superior State.

Campbell, a 6-1, 185-pounder from Pickering, Ont., is the Vipers' No. 2 scorer with 18 goals and 21 assists for 39 points. He has three game-winning goals and five power-play goals through 24 games in 2009-10.

"Rich (Metro) saw him at the end of last year and really liked him," LSSU coach Jim Roque said. "He should be a good replacement for Zac MacVoy. He's big and strong, and skates well. He's had a really good start to the season."

Campbell is ranked sixth in the Ontario Junior Hockey League in game star points and is tied for 19th in OJHL scoring. The NHL Central Scouting B List player represented Team Canada East in the World Junior A Challenge in Summerside, P.E.I., in November. He had a goal and an assist in the team's first two games - a 5-4 victory over Team USA and a 7-5 win over Belaruse. Team Canada East went on to finish 2-2 in the tournament.

Campbell also represented the OJHL in the Canadian Junior Hockey League Prospects Games Dec. 8-9 in Winkler, Manitoba. The two-game, total-goals event included the top 40 draft eligible Junior A players in Canada. Campbell was voted Team East's player of the game after the first contest, which was an 8-1 loss. Team East came back to win the second game, 2-0.

Sternberg is a 6-0, 190-pound defenseman from Toronto and has four goals and 21 assists through 34 games for the Nepean Raiders of the Central Junior Hockey League. He is ranked fifth among defenseman in CJHL scoring. Sternberg, who is following in the footsteps of current Laker defenseman Matt Cowie, also played two seasons at Culver (Ind.) Academy, where former LSSU captain Jason Nightingale now coaches.

"Jason got us in contact with him," Roque said. "We saw him last spring at the prospects camp and Tim Christian noticed him. He's a lot like Steven Kaunisto - a right-hander who skates well. He's aggressive and has a lot of personality. He's having a real good year for Nepean."

LSSU's 2010-11 recruiting class also includes current Traverse City North Stars forwards Dan Radke, Kyle Jean and Kelin Ainsworth, and Oakville Blades forward Kellan Lain. They previously signed their NLIs and deferred enrollment. Roque noted that the Lakers hope to add a goaltender and possibly one more defenseman for next season.
