Algoma Thunderbird B-Ball Women Finish First In OCAA West Region as Both Women's and Men's Teams Sweep Niagara College

The Algoma U Thunderbird women's basketball team finished their regular season with a victory over the Niagara College Knights. The Thunderbirds defeated the Knights with a score of 62-40.

Top scorers for Algoma University College were Danielle D'Ettorre with a 26 points and Melissa Stumpo with 15. Jenn Muio had 6 and Miranda Chaimbrone 5 points. Top scorer for Niagara College was Kaitlyn McKenna with 11 points.

In order for the Algoma Women's team to finish first in the OCAA West Region, they needed St. Clair College to defeat Sheridan College. St. Clair defeated Sheridan 48-39, therefore the Algoma U Women finished first in the OCAA West Region and receive a first round bye straight into the OCAA Women's Basketball Provincial Championships.

With Danielle D'Ettorre's 26 points this evening she has set a new OCAA regular season scoring record. The previous record was set by Iona Dawes of Humber College in 1989-90 who had finished with a 25 points per game in regular season play. D'Ettorre finished her regular season points per game average at 26 points which sets the new record.

The Algoma U Men's basketball team also defeated Niagara College Men's team 68-53. With this win the Algoma U Men's team's playoff hopes are still alive. Top scorer for Algoma was Andrew Turgeon with 17 points. Zach Wright had 16 points and Ariel Baptiste added 14. The top scorer for Niagara was Ian Harriette with 14 points.

The Algoma U Men's team have their last regular season game against Sault College here at the George Leach Centre next Friday, February 16th at 8 pm.

The Women's team now will be in preparation for the OCAA Women's Basketball Provincial Championships in Ottawa at Algonquin College on March 1st to the 3rd.
