The St. Mary's Knights are city champions once again.

This time the girls basketball teams rose to the occassion and swept both the senior and junior division championships on Saturday night at Korah.

In senior, the Knights defeated the St. Basil Saints 39-23 as Vanessa Chaimbrone led the Knights attack with eight points while St. Mary's knocked off the Saints 33-20 in junior on the strength of 14 points from Beth Gignac.

In the beginning of the senior contest it appeared as though the Saints were prepared to shock the undefeated Knights by jumping out to a 9-0 first quarter lead.

But the Knights scored the last six points of the quarter and grabbed a 20-14 lead by halftime.

"We were very nervous all day but we settled down in the second quarter and never looked back after that," said Knights head coach Dave Zagordo.

Stephanie Colizza, Brittany Denneny and Kyleigh Binkley added six points each for the Knights while Lauren Wozny replied with eight points for the Saints and Adrianna Bruni six.

The Knights have elected to play in AA at the Northern Ontario Secondary Schools Association (NOSSA)championships next weekend in Sudbury. St. Basil will represent the city in AAA, also in Sudbury.

In the junior contest, St. Basil took a 14-12 lead into the locker room at halftime but the Knights went on to prevail with a strong second half.

Meagan Delfre added 12 points for St. Mary's while Chrissy Briel paced the Saints with 11 points and Sarah DiDonato drained seven.

Both teams will also head to NOSSA next although which category they will play in is not yet known.
