The St. Mary's Knights saw their attempt for a fourth Central Bowl title slip away on Saturday afternoon in North York.

Facing a tough defense and snowy conditions, the speedy Knights offensive attack was held in check as the Eastview Wildcats from Barrie captured the Central Bowl with a 16-8 win.

The Central Bowl, played under three down rules, is one of six Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Assocaition (OFSAA) football title games.

Jeff Greco opened the scoring on a 21 yard run and a safety by the Knights defense gave St. Mary's an 8-0 lead after one quarter.

But a punt return for a touchdown in the second quarter brought the Wildcats to within a point at the half. In the second half, the Wildcats returned another punt for a major in the third quarter and added a field goal in the fourth to complete the scoring.

Greco led the Knights offense, which gained 125 yards along the ground, with 76 yards rushing on 13 carries while Chris Lebel was held to 38 yards on nine attempts. Quarterback John Mullin completed eight of 12 passes for 43 yards including three strikes to each of Lebel and Greco.

No defensive statistics were kept for the game.

Also in North York, Thunder Bay's Hammarskjold Vikings defeated North Bay's Widdifield Wildcats 17-3 to capture the Northern Bowl. For details on that game from BayToday.ca, click here.
