Knights celebrate with big win over Sir James Dunn

With the bleachers packed to capacity on Saturday afternoon at Rocky DiPietro Field, the St. Mary's Knights entertained their large following with a 44-0 win over the Sir James Dunn Eagles.

The High School Football League senior division contest was just one of several events throughout the weekend celebrating St. Mary's 50th anniversary.

In an anticipated matchup between two unbeaten teams heading into the game, the Knights proved to be too strong for the defending city and NOSSA champion Eagles by racking up 509 yards in total offense.

The win gives the Knights (4-0) sole possession of first place while Sir James Dunn falls to second at 3-1 with one week remaining in the regular season.

Jeff Greco rushed for three touchdowns on runs of one, 10 and 13 yards while Chris Lebel punched in a nine yard major score, Mark Devuono scored on a 66 yard catch and run from quarterback John Mullin and Jordan Casola hauled in a six yard touchdown pass.

Jeff Pellegrino kicked a 28 yard field goal and added five converts.

Lebel led the Knights rushing attack with 157 yards on 15 carries while Greco added 71 yards on 10 carries. Mullin completed 11 of 15 passes for 256 yards including four to Devuono for 142 yards and three to Casola for 44 yards.

Defensively, Jordan Verdone led with 5.5 tackles and two sacks. Giancarlo Perra and Mark Thorburn each made four tackles while Michael Esson recorded an interception and recovered a fumble.

Peter McGonegal rushed for 67 yards on 11 carries for the Eagles. Defensively, Frank Weise made eight tackles, Lucas Walker recorded 6.5 tackles and a sack, Steve Running and Matt McKenzie added five tackles each and Navarre Cellini four. Frank Theriault hauled in an interception.

*** JUNIOR:

In junior action on Saturday morning, St. Mary's defeated Sir James Dunn 14-9. Mike Martens and Aaron Bertolo each scored touchdowns for the Knights while Ricky Lamon added two converts. SJD scorers were not available.
