It's like mini-putt with arrows

Archery: Now in 3D!

The Sault had its first 3D indoor archery event on Saturday.

52 shooters from Sudbury, Wawa, St. Joseph Island, and the Sault gathered in the Rankin arena to take part in the event that organizers the Sault North Archery Club said is the first of its kind in Sault Ste Marie and that they hope it will become an annual one.

The way it works is animal-shaped targets, some of which are mechanized and moving, are positioned throughout a shooting range and shooters take shots in rounds.

They start off on their first animal-target and in each round move to another target and they get points based on how close they get to a little circle imprinted on the animal.

For example, a miss gets 0 points, hitting the animal target anywhere gets 5 points, and a bullseye is 11 points; the highest points at the end of two rounds of 20 wins.

Organizer Mike Keenan said it is fair to describe the event as 'mini-putt with arrows'.

The shooters are categorized into groups depending on age and equipment level and prizes are awarded in each category.

Bows range from your most basic to heavily tricked out with sights and balances and skill level varied from world-championship winners to first-timers.

In total the Sault North Archery Club Spring Fling raised about $1,000 for their club.

Keenan said that if anyone is interested in getting a free archery lesson they should connect with the group.
