I-500 Snowmobile Race turns 40

SAULT STE. MARIE - Spectators at the first International 500 Snowmobile Race in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan witnessed speeds so slow they could walk across the track between machines. This year, organizers of the race’s 40th annual running expect top speeds around the 100 mph mark, thousands of spectators, and the only people on the track will be those competing for more than $38,000 in prize money.

On February 2, 2008, the event known by many as the granddaddy of all snowmobile races returns to the one-mile oval. The I-500 has come along way in 40 years and spectators continue to marvel at the thrills, spills, and general excitement that hovers in the chilly winter air on the first Saturday in February.

"Lots of changes over the years," remarked Jan Bailey, chairman for the past 10 years. “Different sleds, rule changes, and just the racing itself has changed. My family was involved since the first race, but I never thought we would see 40.”

Bailey and a team of volunteers are anticipating an exceptional racing event, due in part to good weather conditions leading up to the race and in part to the celebration of 40 years.

"We've got snow on the ground, the trails are coming around, and people will be able to come for the race and hit the trails. That’s usually the best possible circumstance – when people can come the week before, enjoy the trails, and spend the weekend at the race track,” Bailey said.

Drivers are expected from points near and far, including three teams from Alaska, one of which was last year’s winner. The view from inside the racing helmet is especially exciting this year, as extra prize money dangles before the leader on laps numbered 40, 140, 240, 340, and 440. Additional prizes, like commemorative leather coats, will also be awarded to the 40th anniversary winning drivers.

Spectators may experience exhilaration overload as they divide their attention between the speed of the I-500 track and the high-flying excitement of World Power Sports Association Snow Cross racing. For the price of a single admission button, spectators can access both races on separate tracks in the same location. Slated for Saturday and Sunday, Snow Cross racing will include racing for children and adults on separate tracks built with the full complement of moguls and jumps. Organizers say 350 entries are anticipated, ranging from professionals to novice class.

Ron Hacker, Michigan regional director of the WPSA, will oversee eight races this year, but the event held in conjunction with the I-500 is one of a kind.

"I-500 weekend is unique because you can watch two races for the price of one. You can turn your attention from a high-speed race to one that is based on handling and maneuvering. They are distinctively different yet equally enjoyable,” Hacker said.

Racing action begins on Monday, January 28, when time trials for the I-500 begin. Time trials continue through Wednesday, when racers try to post the best time for their two-lap trial.

On Thursday, January 31, fans can collect autographs at a “Meet the Drivers” event held at the local Wal-Mart store. A children’s Mini-Z race is held on Friday, with racing action on the I-500 oval Saturday and Snow Cross excitement both Saturday and Sunday.

Throughout the week, tents are available for warming and include beverage, food, and product vendors. Families wishing to extend their trip may also want to consider local ice rinks and Minneapolis Woods Ski Hill, where numerous tubing runs and skiing are featured. Most city streets are also open to snowmobile traffic.

"The I-500 is a one-of-a-kind event that's not to be missed by anyone who enjoys the thrill of racing,” said Linda Hoath, executive director of the Sault Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Combined with other winter attractions, both indoors and outdoors, race weekend is something the whole family can enjoy,” she added.
