Hounds winless skid continues in Saginaw

The slumping Soo Greyhounds found themselves on the wrong end of the scoreboard again Saturday night losing another close contest on the road trip to the Saginaw Spirit.

With both Kevin Druce of the Greyhounds and Eric Pfligler of the Spirit turning in solid performances in the net, the Spirit managed to squeak out a 2-1 victory in Ontario Hockey League action in Saginaw.

The Greyhounds, playing for the third consecutive night, return home pointless on the three-game road swing through West Division cities and have now lost four contests in a row.

With both goaltenders playing so well, neither team could mange a goal even strength as all three goals were recorded on the power play.

Adam Rhymer scored his second goal in as many games to give the Hounds a 1-0 lead midway through the first period. Tom Pyatt scored to tie the game at 1-1 before the opening period closed while Adam Gibson scored the game winner 12:31 into the third period.

Pfligler stopped 37 of 38 shots and was named the game's first star while Druce stopped 35 of 37 shots in being selected the third star. Pyatt was named second star.

The Greyhounds fall to just a single game over .500 with a 16-15-1-1 record for 34 points in 33 games, one contest shy of the midway point of the regular season.

The Plymouth Whalers have taken over top spot in the West Division with 35 points after a win at home over Sarnia on Saturday while Sting remains tied with the Hounds in second. Windsor, 6-3-1 in their last 10 games, have crept into the race with 31 points.

The Greyhounds get an opportunity to secure a win on home ice Wednesday as the Sudbury Wolves visit Memorial Gardens at 7 p.m. to begin a three-game homestand. The Hounds host Windsor on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Owen Sound on Sunday at 2 p.m.

In other OHL action on Saturday, Kyle Quincey scored a goal and added two assists as Mississauga defeated Sudbury 3-1. Chris Beckford-Tseu stopped 37 shots in leading Kingston past St. Michael's 3-0.

Vaclav Meidl's power play goal in the second stood as the winner as Plymouth edged Sarnia 3-2 in a rough affair. Referee Darcy Burchell handed out 74 minutes in penalties plus an additional two 10-minute misconducts.

Sean Courtney scored twice as Erie beat Belleville 5-1 while Sault native Craig Kennedy scored three times to lead Windsor past Owen Sound 6-2.
