Hounds shutout the Storm (video)

The Soo Greyhounds did what they needed to do on Saturday night.

Using the stellar netminding of Kyle Gajewski and a solid team defensive effort, the Greyhounds shutout the Guelph Storm 2-0 in front of 4,553 fans at the Steelback Centre.

The win leaps the Hounds one point past the Storm for fifth place in the Ontario Hockey League's western conference, although the Storm do hold a game in hand.

After a scoreless opening period, the Hounds opened the scoring 9:24 into the second as Brandon MacLean knocked a rebound past Storm goaltender Thomas McCollum.

With 3:15 remaining in the frame, Cody Thorton scored his 35th goal of the season on the power play to send to homeside to the final period up 2-0.

Gajewski, who played very well in both the first and thrid periods, stopped 27 shots for his second shutout of the year. The game was also his 150th career OHL regular season game.

The Greyhounds are back in action on Wednesday as they host the Sarnia Sting at 7 p.m. at the Steelback Centre.

The Sting currently hold seventh position in the conference, sitting five points behind the Hounds with two games in hand.

Sarnia lost 8-4 to the Plymouth Whalers on Saturday night while the fourth place Saginaw Spirit rolled past the Mississauga IceDogs 8-2.
