Hounds drop a tough one (Updated)

The Soo Greyhounds and Brampton Battalion both showed they're capable of playing with playoff-type intensity.

In an entertaining, emotional battle on Friday night at the Steelback Centre, the Battion needed five shooters to outscore the Greyhounds 3-2 in a shootout and record a 3-2 win in front 4,509 fans.

Dustin Jeffrey and Aaron Alphonso scored for the Hounds in regulation time while Luke Lynes and Bobby Sanguinetti replied for the Battalion.

Not only were the Hounds forced to kill some questionable penalties but they played without defenseman Josh Godfrey for the last 26:13 of the game and the shootout after receiving a major penalty and a game misconduct for boarding late in the second period.

After a scoreless first period, Alphonso opened the scoring for the Hounds with his 10th goal of the year 57 seconds into the second.

Lynes replied with the equalizer for the Battalion three minutes later while Sanguinetti put Brampton ahead 2-1 early in the third period on the power play.

With Chris MacKinnon sitting in the box for a holding penalty that made the Steelback Centre crowd irate, Dustin Jeffrey lifted the roof with a breakaway shorthanded goal after stripping Sanguinetti at the Hounds blueline.

Jeffrey also picked up an assist on Alphonso's goal.

Another highlight was the quality goaltending battle between Brampton's Bryan Pitton and the Soo's Kyle Gajewski. Brampton outshot the Hounds 34-30.

In the shootout, Lynes, Sanguinetti and Matt Duchene, with the winner, scored out of five shooters for Brampton while MacKinnon and Brandon MacLean, who had a solid game, replied for the Hounds.

The Hounds conclude a three-game homestand on Saturday with the Peterborough Petes visiting for a 7:30 p.m. start.
