The Soo Greyhounds did what they needed to do against the Sudbury Wolves.

The Hounds outplayed and outhustled the rebuilding Wolves to a 3-1 victory on Wednesday night at the Steelback Centre.

Most fans left the Steelback Centre reflecting on a 4-1 victory but Chris MacKinnon's empty net goal at the buzzer was eventually taken off the scoresheet following a video review after the game.

The score could have been much higher in favour of the Greyhounds if not for the play of Wolves goaltender Sebastian Dahm, who was a hero for Sudbury in their run to the Ontario Hockey League final last season.

Brandon Biggers and Josh Godfrey led the Hounds offense with a goal and an assist while Jacob Lalonde also scored.

The Hounds led 1-0 after one period and 3-1 after two.

Gerome Giudice cut into a Hounds 3-0 lead with the lone Sudbury goal.

Kyle Gajewski picked up the win in goal and faced only 19 shots while Dahm saw 32 Greyhound shots.

The Northern Ontario rivals did get under each others skin several times during the game.

After leveling Dustin Jeffrey early in the game, the Wolves Ryan Crouch fought Andrew Campbell. James Livingston was then the lone man penalized after pouncing on John Kurtz, who deked Sean Jones in front of the Hounds bench. Livingston then fought Kyle Tarini in the third period.

With the win, the Hounds (15-5-1-31) move a point ahead of the Windsor Spitfires (13-5-4-30) for first place in the west division and three points behind the Kitchener Rangers (17-3-0-34) for top spot in the western conference.

The Hounds continue their three-game homestand on Friday against the Brampton Battalion at 7:30 p.m.
