Sault Hockey Officials Association Announces Yearly Award Winners

Sault Ste. Marie, ON -- The Sault Hockey Officials Association announced their yearly award winners for the 2006-2007 season at their year-end banquet on 11 May.

In a year of great change and progress for the Association, the intention to create a more positive image within the community took a big step in the right direction.

The Association volunteered time for the Rotary Celebrity Skate and raised over $1500 for the local chapter of Child Find Ontario. The Association's first-ever all officials hockey team, the Fightin' Zebras, won the Recreation Division title in the men's league hockey tournament, 'The Tournament III'.

At the banquet, the official of the year award went to Ken Smith. "Kenny makes a great deal of effort at each assignment at each level and his participation within the Association emulates everything we would like to project as an image," said Association President Lucas Bedell.

Other award winners included Paul Sdao as the Rookie of the Year, and Darren Corcoran as the official deemed Most Promising. "It's difficult with so many deserving guys to make a wrong decision," said Secretary Kurtus Delhenty.

Though the 2006-2007 season is over, the Association is not without assignments both on and off the ice. The Association has a team, the Fightin' Zebras, registered in the Relay for Life to raise money for the Cancer Society.
